Fair Park, basically your backyard

Fair Park is a 277-acre National Historic Landmark with five museums and ten performance and sporting venues, and it hosts events year-round, not just the State Fair of Texas. It is about a ten-minute walk or a few minutes’ drive from the house.

Also on the campus: Big Tex, Leonhardt Lagoon, the Automobile Building, Centennial Hall, the Tower Building and Pan American Arena, part of one of the largest surviving collections of 1930s Art Deco exposition buildings.

Night out in Deep Ellum

Deep Ellum is historically Dallas’ blues and jazz district. Today it concentrates live music, clubs, bars, restaurants and entertainment in a walkable neighborhood a few minutes from the house. It is worth a daytime visit too, for murals, shops and galleries.

Also worth knowing: Green Light Social, The Nines, Truth and Alibi, Angry Dog and Dallas Comedy Club.

Live music

Two of Dallas’ biggest stages are a short walk away, and Deep Ellum’s clubs are a few minutes further.

A short list rather than every restaurant in Dallas. Deep Ellum first, then picks by occasion.

Dinner and drinks on Greenville Avenue

Lower Greenville has a different pace from Deep Ellum: patios, neighborhood bars, date-night restaurants and cocktails rather than clubs and concert venues. About eight to twelve minutes by car.

Also worth knowing: Single Wide, Strangeways, Stan’s Blue Note, Old Crow, Hide and Clifton Club.

Museums and culture

Two museums sit inside Fair Park. The Dallas Arts District, the largest urban arts district in the country, clusters the DMA, the Nasher, the Crow Museum, performance venues and public spaces about ten minutes from the house.

Also worth knowing: Dallas World Aquarium, Frontiers of Flight Museum and the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

Things to do

Daytime outings and group activities. Fair Park is only two miles east of downtown, so most of this sits within a small radius of the house.

Sports and major events

Nearby versus worth the drive. The Arlington stadiums are 25 to 35-plus minutes under normal conditions, and game-day traffic can be serious.
